Combating HIV/AIDS, dealing with hate, political imagery
- Regarding "Global Fund can improve world health" (Page A17, Tuesday), what impresses me most about the Global Fund is the medication it provides to pregnant women who are HIV-positive so they can give birth to healthy children. Prior to the Global Fund, all of these children were condemned to death from AIDS. The goal is to bring the number of children contacting AIDS from their mothers to as close to zero as possible.
Equally impressive is the assistance the Global Fund offers for more than 4 million orphaned and vulnerable children, many of whom are cared for by their grandmothers.
It is imperative that the U.S. honor its pledge of $1.4 billion to the Global Fund.
